Guaymas, Mexico, Port is Thriving; Punta Colonet Coming On-Line

The mega-port at Punta Colonet is still on the drawing boards, but business is booming at the port of Guaymas, Mexico. Guaymas is located in the southwest part of the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico, 242 miles from the U.S. border. Considerable tonnage of copper and iron ore, cement and fertilizer moves through the port. Mexico's government remains committed to building Punta Colonet, largely to accommodate container ships from Asia, and forwarding cargo by rail to U.S. markets. The latest assurance that Punta Colonet planning is on track came from Baja California Governor Jose Guadalupe Osuna Millan on March 17. He said the tender process will begin in May or June.
